Counselling is a collaborative effort between the counsellor and client. Professional counsellors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behaviour change and optimal mental health.

Counselling is a process of talking about and working through your personal problems with a counsellor. The counsellor helps you to address your problems in a positive way by helping you to clarify the issues, explore options, develop strategies, and increase self-awareness.
Having trained and qualified in both, my view is that psychotherapy offers a wider and deeper understanding of ourselves, how we became who we are and the way we relate to others, as well as how to change. Psychotherapy is especially useful for trauma, emotional and physical abuse, family dynamics and mood disorders. Both counselling and psychotherapy can enable and empower people to take back control, improve their self esteem and lead more fulfilling happier lives.
Counselling sessions themselves are usually around 50 – 60 minutes.
As Counsellors we are trained to listen closely to you, your feelings, your thoughts, and fears.
The process can include challenging your thoughts or exploring more deeply feelings or a range of other ways to offer insight.
Counselling might be beneficial for you if something has been troubling you over a period and you are having difficulty finding a solution on your own. Similarly, if things are getting on top of you, and affecting your well-being, for example, causing depression, anxiety, or stress.
Here are few questions you should be asking yourself before going ahead with a therapist:
- Do you like your therapist?
- Do you feel understood and heard?
- Does your therapist respect boundaries?
- Are you being challenged?
- Can you get angry at your therapist?
- Is this the right kind of therapy for me?
In your first session you are likely to be feeling anxious and so a first session will be help you to feel comfortable and at ease.
You can expect to be asked to talk about:
- Why you sought therapy. A particular issue probably led you to seek counseling
- Your personal history and current situation. The therapist will ask you a series of questions about your life
- Your current symptoms
The key is to be open and honest about your feelings, be prepared to engage and ask questions.
If a client needs to cancel due to illness or other relevant mitigating circumstances I will not charge. However, unfortunately I will still have to charge if i am not given a weeks notice or if the session is just cancelled or there are no exceptional circumstances I will charge for that lost session.
I am an ethical therapist so I do not want clients continuing to pay for sessions, when they feel they have come to the end of the process. Although my aim is to enable clients to achieve positive change in their lives as quickly as possible. However, realistically, issues such as bereavement can be more complex and take considerably longer to find a way forward.
